Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. Faculty, staff, and students work together with business, industry, government, community groups, and non-government organizations to address a wide range of challenges facing our state and the world. Partnerships include Camcore, the Forest Productivity Cooperative (FPC), the Southern Forest Resource Assessment Consortium (SOFAC), and the Tree Improvement Program (TIP). The College of Natural Resources (CNR) at North Carolina State University is a world leader in the sustainable use of natural resources. The college’s comprehensive approach to teaching, research and service encompass the many and varied ways in which people’s physical, economic and social needs are met through the wise use of natural resources.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead research in evaluating the comprehensive economic impacts of Hurricane Helene on the Southern Forest Sector.

Main duties and responsibilities include:
  • Identifying usage of salvage timber in forest products markets and perceived impacts from hurricanes.
  • Exploring available tools and innovations that assess hurricane damage.
  • Assessing potential economy-wide impacts of Hurricane Helene using a computable general equilibrium model.

Other Work/Responsibilities

  • Assist the PI in developing progress reports.
  • Analyze the data and prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Lead and assist PI in other grant proposals.
  • Work in results dissemination and outreach efforts as required and asked by PI.

Department Required Skills

Develop, design, or execute fundamental research activities for a single or multiple research project(s); Participate in formulating research methods and suggesting options for improving quality of research.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Strong social survey experiences and statistical training; demonstrate evidence of qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills.

Ph.D. in forestry, social science, applied economics, or related fields. An applicant must demonstrate evidence of strong research skills and track record of academic publications
