Essential Job Duties

Join our Facilities team as a Roofer/Waterproofer and take the lead in maintaining, repairing, and installing a variety of roofing and waterproofing systems across campus. This role combines hands-on technical work with team leadership, ensuring safe, high-quality service that keeps our buildings protected year-round.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and perform installation, repair, and preventive maintenance on roofing and waterproofing systems (single-ply, BUR, modified bitumen, metal, slate, and shingle).
  • Inspect, evaluate, and maintain roof and drainage systems, including sealing joints, resealing windows, and repairing membranes.
  • Ensure project quality, safety compliance, and efficient use of tools, materials, and resources.
  • Collaborate with other trades to support campus-wide maintenance and respond to service needs.
  • Perform physical work including lifting up to 30 lbs. frequently (and 60 lbs. occasionally), bending, squatting, reaching overhead, and climbing ladders up to 8 ft.—with or without reasonable accommodation.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform waterproofing and repair work on buildings, including roof patching, downspout replacement, and asphalt or concrete repairs.
  • Report to work during adverse weather conditions as part of the university’s essential personnel team, even when the campus operates on an alternate schedule.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal under supervisor direction during inclement weather.
  • Support other trades as needed, applying knowledge in at least one additional trade and general familiarity with others.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading small roofing or waterproofing teams or projects.
  • Skilled in sealing building envelopes and performing minor asphalt or concrete repairs.
  • Familiarity with roofing tools and equipment such as torches, welding guns, hand brakes, and grinders.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, codes, and best practices related to roofing and construction work.
  • Proven ability to assess roof conditions and recommend appropriate repair or waterproofing materials.

Required License or Certification

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
