Essential Job Duties

The Small Animal Clinical Services – Cardiology team at NC State’s Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center is seeking a compassionate, team-oriented Veterinary Assistant to support patient care for advanced cardiovascular cases. This role involves assisting with patient intake, monitoring, diagnostics, and treatments while ensuring a safe and efficient hospital experience.

You will collaborate with clinicians, veterinary students, interns, residents, and referring veterinarians to provide high-quality care, support clinical teaching, and contribute to hospital operations. This role also involves lifting up to 50 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodations) and adapting to flexible work hours as required.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Assist with patient intake, preparation, and monitoring, including placement of ECG leads, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure monitoring.
  • Transport patients safely throughout the hospital and assist clinicians during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Maintain and organize clinical spaces, including cleaning, restocking, biohazard management, and equipment maintenance.
  • Monitor and support sedated patients and assist with CPR and other life-saving interventions when necessary.
  • Record and communicate patient data accurately in hospital information systems.
  • Orient, train, and mentor new staff, students, interns, and residents in hospital policies, procedures, and patient care.
  • Assist with supply inventory, ordering, and maintenance of Cardiology-specific equipment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

Minimum Experience/Education

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a canine/feline veterinary clinical setting, preferably at a teaching hospital.
  • Knowledge of patient monitoring, diagnostic equipment, and clinical procedures for small animals.
  • Ability to provide high-quality patient care while working safely around animals, chemicals, anesthetic gases, and potential zoonotic diseases.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
