Essential Job Duties

Join our team as a Floor Technician at NC State’s Facilities Division, where you will play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and appearance of over 10 million square feet of campus space. You will use specialized floor care equipment and techniques to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position requires physically active work, including lifting up to 60 pounds continuously and up to 90 pounds occasionally (with or without a reasonable accomodation), while performing tasks such as stripping and refinishing floors, carpet extraction, and routine floor maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strip and refinish hard surface floors, extract and clean carpets, and perform routine maintenance using equipment such as burnishers, auto-scrubbers, and carpet extractors.
  • Complete assigned cleaning tasks including vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing, and applying floor finishes.
  • Follow established safety procedures, including using PPE and posting caution signage.
  • Identify and report building discrepancies, safety hazards, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Accurately complete incident reports, interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and apply knowledge of safety protocols.
  • Maintain safe, efficient, and high-quality floor care practices across assigned areas.

  • Jump into action during building emergencies — from tackling unexpected floods to supporting urgent cleanups — using specialized emergency equipment to keep our spaces safe and functional

Minimum Experience/Education

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Special certification may be required for some of these positions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing floor care and housekeeping duties in a university, healthcare, or commercial environment.
  • Familiarity with floor care equipment such as burnishers, auto-scrubbers, and carpet extractors.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and proper use of cleaning chemicals and PPE.
  • Ability to work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Experience supporting emergency or inclement weather response in a facilities setting.
