Essential Job Duties

Join NC State’s DASA Housing Facilities team and help maintain safe, comfortable, and efficient living environments for our on-campus community. As an HVAC Mechanic, you’ll support 20 residence halls, more than 1,500 apartment units, and 14 fraternity and sorority houses—ensuring reliable operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems, including air handling units, chillers, DOAS units, hydronic systems, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and control system issues using wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and replacement of motors, pumps, valves, compressors, and control components.
  • Survey and assess mechanical rooms and system performance to identify and proactively resolve potential issues.
  • Apply advanced troubleshooting techniques to improve efficiency and ensure compliance with safety standards and building codes.
  • Lift and carry up to 60 pounds on a recurring basis, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Responsible for departmental on-call duties on a rotational basis.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water and steam distribution, and control systems.
  • Skilled in diagnosing equipment malfunctions and performing detailed repair procedures using HVAC tools and testing equipment.
  • Experience in commercial or institutional HVAC work preferred.
  • Class II, III, or IV refrigerant certification preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire, must be maintained.
