Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science (exss.unc.edu) supports an undergraduate program of over 1,300 undergraduate majors with three specialization areas (Exercise and Sport Science, Fitness Professional, Sport Administration) and nearly 300 minors; a Master of Arts graduate program enrolling ~60 students also with three specializations (Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration, and Kinesiology); and a doctoral program in Human Movement Science in partnership with the UNC-CH School of Medicine (hmsc.unc.edu). The mission of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is to discover, create and promote knowledge of human movement to improve the quality of life of individuals and society. The mission of EXSS is further enhanced through interdisciplinary cooperation and departmental faculty securing competitive extramural funding in the form of contracts and grants. These endeavors enable the department to advance knowledge and thus serve the state and nation.

The teaching, research, and service efforts of the EXSS Department are supported by an outstanding faculty and staff, which currently includes: 37 full-time faculty, 9 part-time (fixed term) faculty, 20 joint appointment / adjunct faculty, 10 emeritus faculty, 36 full-time EXSS staff members, and 18 full-time Campus Recreation staff members.

Position Summary

Responsibilities: 
  • Teach three undergraduate classes per semester (9 credits) related to exercise physiology and exercise testing/prescription. 
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies to teach a wide range of learners and address evolving classroom needs. 
  • Work with college students outside the classroom setting (e.g., mentoring, advising, supervising, internships, Honors thesis, student-focused professional development, networking, or career advising).
  • Participate in departmental and university service and governance function 
  • Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Chair of the Department 
  • Contribute positively to the departmental culture of collegiality

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • An earned doctorate (PhD, EdD, ScD, etc.) in kinesiology/exercise science or a related field is required. ABD at the time of application is acceptable but must be completed by the start date of the position. 
  • College teaching experience in exercise physiology and exercise testing/prescription-related courses is required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience teaching course topics involving Sports Performance Training, Clinical Exercise Prescription, Exercise Testing and Prescription, Theory and Application of Strength and Conditioning, Corrective Exercise Training, Sports Nutrition, Data Analytics, Integrated Human Performance, or Research Methods. 
  • Practical experience in exercise leadership in performance, general fitness, or clinical settings 
  • Experience using varied teaching approaches to reach a wide range of learners 
  • Experience with student-focused work (e.g., student clubs, mentoring, advising, supervising, internships, Honors thesis, student-focused professional development, networking, or career advising) 
  • Experience in administration (e.g., curricular design and approval, accreditation process, internship coordination, program review/self-study, etc.)
